Anno 1970

4 febbraio - Aerolineas Argentinas BAe 748; near Corrientes, Argentina: The aircraft entered a steep dive and crashed a few minutes after a night takeoff with severe thunderstorms in the area. All four crew members and 33 passengers were killed.
21 febbraio - Swissair Convair 990; near Wuerenlingen, Switzerland: The aircraft had an onboard explosion shortly after takeoff on a flight to Tel Aviv. The crew had difficulty seeing the instruments due to smoke in the cockpit and the aircraft crashed a short time later. The explosion was due to a bomb. All nine crew members and 38 passengers were killed.
1 aprile - Royal Air Maroc Caravelle; near Casablanca, Morocco: The aircraft crashed into electrical transmission pylons about two miles short of the runway during final approach. All 54 of the 76 passengers and four of the six crew members were killed.
21 aprile - Philippine Air Lines BAe 748; near Manila Philippines: The aircraft broke up in flight at cruise after an onboard explosion. A bomb in the lavatory was suspected. All four crew members and 32 passengers were killed.
5 luglio - Air Canada DC8-63; Toronto, Canada: The aircraft was approaching for a normal landing when its descent rate increased shortly before touchdown, possibly due to the premature deployment of the ground spoilers. The crew attempted to recover, and the number four engine struck the runway and broke away. The aircraft was able to climb after losing the engine, but after several explosions the number three engine and part of the right wing separated when the aircraft was at about 3,000 feet (910 meters). The aircraft subsequently crashed, killing all nine crew members and 100 passengers.
5 agosto - Pakistan International Airlines F27; Islamabad, Pakistan: The aircraft entered a steep dive and crashed about three minutes after a night takeoff in poor weather. All four crew members and 26 passengers were killed.
12 agosto - China Airlines YS11; Taipei, Taiwan: The aircraft was on approach under conditions of heavy rain and low clouds when it struck a low ridge about 660 feet (200 meters) about one half mile (800 meters) from the runway. Two of the five crew members and 12 of the 26 passengers were killed.
12 agosto - Indian Airlines F27; near Silchar, India: The aircraft crashed into high ground shortly after takeoff. All five crew members and 34 passengers were killed.
28 dicembre - American Airlines (Trans Caribbean Airways) 727-200; St. Thomas, VI: The aircraft had a hard landing which caused it to bounce. The crew executed a second touchdown which caused on of the main landing gear to fail. The aircraft overran the runway on the right side and hit an embankment. None of the crew members and two of the 46 passengers were killed.
31 dicembre - Pakistan International Airlines F27; East Pakistan: The aircraft lost altitude and impacted about 300 feet (90 meters) short of the runway. Seven of the 31 passengers were killed.
Anno 1971

2 gennaio - EgyptAir Comet4; Tripoli, Libya: The aircraft struck sand dunes four miles (6.4 km) from the runway during approach. All eight crew members and eight passengers were killed.
7 giugno - Allegheny Airlines Convair 580; New Haven, CT: The aircraft crashed about 3/8 of a mile (600 m) short of the runway threshold during landing in reduced visibility. Two of the three crew members and 26 of the 28 passengers were killed.
30 luglio - Nippon Airways 727-200; northern Honshu, Japan, CA: The aircraft crashed after an in flight collision with a jet fighter. All seven crew members and 155 passengers were killed. The fighter pilot was able to bail out successfully.
4 settembre - Alaska Airlines 727-100; near Juneau, AK: The aircraft was inbound for landing when it flew into the slopes of a mountain about 28 miles (30 km) west of the airfield. The crew had received misleading navigational information for reasons that were not determined. All seven crew members and 104 passengers were killed.
21 novembre - China Airlines Caravelle; near Penghu Islands, Formosa Strait between Taiwan and the PRC: The aircraft was believed to have been destroyed by an inflight explosion caused by a bomb. All 17 passengers and eight crew members were killed.
9 dicembre - Indian Airlines HS748; near Chinnamanur, India: The aircraft was on descent into Madurai when it crashed into high ground about 50 miles (80 km) from the airport. The event occurred in daylight and reduced visibility. All four crew members and 17 passengers were killed.
Anno 1972

7 gennaio - Iberia Caravelle; Ibiza, Spain: The aircraft flew into the slopes of a 1,250 foot (380 meter) mountain during a visual approach in daylight conditions but with broken clouds between 800 and 1,600 feet (240 to 480 meters) The six crew members and 98 passengers were all killed.
13 aprile - VASP YS11; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: The aircraft had a controlled flight into high ground during an approach at night in clear weather. All four crew members and 21 passengers were killed.
5 maggio - Alitalia McDonnell Douglas DC8; near Palermo, Italy: The aircraft flew into the side of a hill during an approach in darkness and poor weather. The seven crew members and 108 passengers were all killed
14 giugno - Japan Air Lines DC8-50; near New Delhi, India: The aircraft crashed short of the runway during an approach in darkness, poor weather, and low visibility. All 11 crew members and 75 of the 78 passengers were killed.
15 giugno - Cathay Pacific Convair 880; near Pleiku, South Vietnam: The aircraft was on a flight from Bangkok to Hong Kong when the aircraft crashed after a bomb detonated on board. The bombing was apparently done as part of an attempted passenger insurance fraud. All 71 passengers and 10 crew members were killed.
11 agosto - Indian Airlines F27; New Delhi, India: The aircraft lost altitude and crashed after abandoning a landing attempt. All four crew members and 14 passengers were killed.
21 ottobre - Olympic Airways YS11; near Athens, Greece: The aircraft crashed into the sea during an approach in conditions of reduced visibility. One of the four crew members and 36 of the 49 passengers were killed.
28 novembre - Japan Air Lines DC8-60; Moscow, Soviet Union: The aircraft stalled and crashed shortly after takeoff for undetermined reasons. Nine of the 14 crew members and 52 of the 62 passengers were killed.
8 dicembre - United Air Lines 737-200; Midway Airport, Chicago: The aircraft crashed during approach. Three of the six crew and 40 of the 55 passengers were killed.
8 dicembre - Pakistan International Airlines F27; near Jalot, Pakistan: The aircraft struck high ground during a flight under deteriorating weather conditions. All five crew members and 28 passengers were killed.
23 dicembre - Braathens SAFE Fokker F28; Skaugum, Norway: The aircraft hit high ground 9.5 miles (15 km) from the airport at about 1350 feet (410 meters) during a night instrument landing approach in fog and low cloud. All three crew members and 37 of the 42 passengers were killed.
Anno 1973

22 gennaio - Royal Jordanian 707-300; Kano, Nigeria: After landing, one of the main landing gear collapsed and the aircraft caught fire. Six of the 11 crew members and 170 of the 198 passengers were killed.
29 gennaio - EgyptAir Ilyushin 18; near Nicosia, Cyprus: The aircraft crashed into mountian during approach. All seven crew members and 30 passengers were killed.
5 marzo - Iberia McDonnell Douglas DC9; Nantes, France: The aircraft had a midair collision with a Spantax Convair 990. All seven crew members and 61 passengers were killed. There were no fatalities on the Spantax aircraft.
31 maggio - Indian Airlines 737-200; near New Dehli, India: The aircraft crashed and caught fire during landing. The crash killed five of the seven crew members and 43 of the 58 passengers.
20 giugno - Aeromexico McDonnell Douglas DC9; Puerto Vallarta, Mexico: The aircraft hit high ground during approach. All four crew members and 23 passengers were killed.
11 luglio - Varig Boeing 707; near Paris, France: The aircraft had a fire in a rear lavatory while inbound for landing. Due to heavy smoke, the crew made a forced landing about three miles (five km) from the airport. By this time, most of the occupants had been overcome by smoke. Seven of the 17 crew members and 116 of the 117 passengers were killed.
31 luglio - Delta Air Lines DC9-31; Boston, MA: The aircraft landed short of the runway in poor visibility, striking a sea wall about 165 feet (50 m) the right of the runway centerline and about 3000 feet (914 m)short All six crew members and 83 passengers were killed. One of the passengers died several months after the accident.
23 ottobre - VASP YS11; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: The aircraft had a rejected takeoff and overran the runway, settling in the waters of an adjacent bay. Eight of the 52 passengers were killed.
Anno 1974

26 gennaio - THY Fokker F28; Izmir, Turkey: The aircraft had an accident during takeoff. Four of the five crew members and 62 of the 68 passengers were killed.
3 marzo - McDonnell Douglas DC10; near Paris, France: During climb, a rear cargo door which was improperly closed blew out. The resulting cabin decompression caused damage to the main cabin floor and to some control cables in the area. The crew was unable to control the aircraft and the plane crashed. All 333 passengers and 12 crew were killed.
7 settembre - Garuda Indonesia Airways F27; Telukbetung, Indonesia: During an attempted go around after a landing attempt in bad weather, the aircraft had sank back to the runway, striking it with the right propeller. The aircraft eventually struck buildings near the runway and caught fire. All three crew members and 28 of the 33 passengers were killed.
20 novembre - Lufthansa Boeing 747; Nairobi, Kenya: The aircraft was not properly configured for takeoff and stalled shortly after becoming airborne, crashing about 3600 feet (1100 meters) beyond the end of the runway. The crash killed 55 of the 140 passengers and 4 of the 17 crew.

30 gennaio - THY Fokker F28; Istanbul, Turkey: The aircraft had an accident during landing. All four crew members and 37 passengers were killed.
3 febbraio - Philippine Air Lines BAe 748; near Manila Philippines: The right engine caught fire shortly after takeoff and the aircraft crashed during the emergency return to the airport. The fire was apparently caused by a failure in the right engine. All five crew members and 27 passengers were killed.
27 febbraio - VASP Embraer Bandeirante; Sao Paulo, Brazil: This aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff. Both crew members and all 13 passengers were killed.
3 agosto - Royal Jordanian 707-300; near Agadir, Morocco: The aircraft flew into high ground about 23 miles (37 km) from the airport while inbound on a flight from Paris. All seven crew members and 181 passengers were killed.
24 settembre - Garuda Indonesia Airways F28-1000; near Palembang, Indonesia: The aircraft had an accident during landing. All four crew members and 21 of the 58 passengers were killed.
Anno 1976

22 gennaio - Transbrasil Embraer Bandeirante; Chapeco, Brazil: This aircraft crashed during takeoff. Both crew members and five of the six passengers were killed.
5 aprile - Alaska Airlines 727; Ketchikan, AK: The aircraft overran the runway after landing. One of the 50 passengers was killed.
27 aprile - American Airlines 727; St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands: The aircraft was on a scheduled flight from JFK airport in New York to St. Thomas. The aircraft overran the runway after an unsuccessful attempt at aborting the landing. Two of the seven crew members and 35 of the 81 passengers were killed.
23 maggio - Philippine Air Lines BAC 111; Mindanao Philippines: The aircraft was hijacked and some of the 82 passengers released. During negotiations, the aircraft caught fire as a result of gunfire and a grenade explosion. Eleven of the remaining passengers and three of the six hijackers were killed.
27 giugno - Air France Airbus A300; Entebbe, Uganda: Aircraft was hijacked and all aboard taken hostage. Some passengers were released shortly after the hijacking and the remainder were taken to Entebbe, Uganda. The remaining hostages were eventually rescued in a commando raid. About seven of the 258 passengers were killed.
10 settembre - British Airways Trident 3B; near Zagreb, Yugoslavia: The aircraft had a midair collision with a Inex Adria DC9-32. All nine crew members and 54 passengers on the Trident were killed. All five crew members and 108 passengers on the DC9 were also killed. The probable cause of this event was failure of the Yugoslavian ATC system to provide adequate separation.
19 settembre - THY Boeing 727; near Isparta, Turkey: The aircraft struck a mountain during the approach. All eight crew members and 146 passengers were killed.
6 ottobre - Cubana McDonnell Douglas DC8; near Barbados: Shortly after departing Barbados, a bomb exploded in the rear of the aircraft and started an uncontrollable fire. During the air turn back, the crew was apparently incapacitated by the smoke and fumes and lost control of the aircraft. All 15 crew members and 58 passengers were killed.
12 ottobre - Indian Airlines Caravelle; Bombay, India: The right engine caught fire shortly after takeoff and the crew elected to return. Fuel flow to the engine was not stopped and the fire spread through the fuselage and led to hydraulic system failure and a loss of aircraft control shortly before landing. All six crew members and 89 passengers were killed.
23 novembre - Olympic Airways YS11; near Kozani, Greece: During approach, the aircraft crashed into a hillside at the 4300 foot (1310 meter) level during a cloudy and rainy weather on a daytime flight. The four crew members and 46 passengers were all killed.
25 dicembre - EgyptAir 707; Bangkok, Thailand: The aircraft crashed into a textile mill during approach. All nine crew members and 43 passengers were killed. Also killed were 20 people on the ground.
Anno 1977

27 marzo - KLM Boeing 747 and Pan Am 747-100; Tenerife, Canary Islands: The aircraft had been on a scheduled flight from Amsterdam to the Las Palmas airport in the Canary Islands, but had been diverted to Tererife because of a bomb explostion in the passenger terminal in Las Palmas. Because of limited visibility and communications difficulties between air traffic control and the KLM aircraft, the KLM 747 started its takeoff while the Pan Am aircraft was on the same runway. All 234 passengers and 14 crew were killed in the KLM 747. Nine of the 16 crew and 321 of the 380 passengers on the Pan Am flight were killed.
27 settembre - Japan Air Lines DC8-60; near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: The aircraft was on an approach in heavy rain and low clouds and struck a hill about 4 miles (6.4 km) short of the runway. The crew had descended below minimum decision height without first establishing visual contact with the runway. Eight of the 10 crew members and 26 of the 69 passengers were killed.
3 novembre - El Al 747; over Belgrade, Yugoslavia: One passenger died after a decompression event.
19 novembre - TAP Air Portugal Boeing 727; Funchal, Portugal: The aircraft touched down long on a wet runway, overran the runway, broke up, and caught fire. Six of the eight crew members and 125 of the 156 passengers were killed.
21 novembre - Austral Lineas Aereas BAC111; near San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina: The aircraft crashed into a hill about 12 miles (20 km) during a night approach in poor weather. All five crew members and 41 of the 74 passengers were killed.
4 dicembre - Malaysian Airline System 737-200; near Johore Strait, Malaysia: The aircraft was hijacked and subsequently destroyed by an in flight explosion. All seven crew members and 93 passengers were killed.
Anno 1978

1 gennaio - Air India 747-200; Bombay, India: The plane crashed in the sea shortly after takeoff, killing all 190 passengers and 23 crew. Flight International magazine states that this accident was due to a failure of an attitude detector.
1 marzo - Continental Airlines DC10; Los Angeles, USA: The crew aborted the takeoff due to a ruptured tire and the aircraft ran off the runway. Two of the 184 passengers were killed.
20 aprile - Korean Air Lines 707-300; near Kem, Soviet Union: The aircraft diverted from its planned course on a flight from Paris to Seoul and strayed over the Soviet Union. After being fired upon by an interceptor aircraft, the crew made a forced landing at night on the surface of a frozen lake. Two of the 97 passengers were killed by the hostile fire.
26 giugno - Air Canada DC9-32; Toronto, Canada: The aircraft had a rejected takeoff after a tire burst. Tire debris was ingested into engine two, causing compressor stalls. Two of the 102 passengers were killed after the aircraft overran the runway.
18 agosto - Philippine Air Lines BAC 111; en route to Manila Philippines: A bomb exploded in a lavatory, killing a passenger. The aircraft was able to continue to flight and land safely.
3 settembre - Air Rhodesia Viscount; near Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe: The aircraft was on a scheduled flight from Kariba to Salisbury when it was hit by a missile fired by fighters from the Joshua Nkomo's Zimbabwe Peoples Revolution Army (ZIPRA). The aircraft had a forced landing about 19 miles (30 km) from the Kariba airport. All four crew members and 34 of the 52 passengers were killed. Ten others who survived the landing were later killed by those who shot down the airliner.
23 dicembre - Alitalia McDonnell Douglas DC9; near Palermo, Italy: The aircraft crashed into the sea about two miles (3.2 km) short of the runway during its approach. The accident occurred in darkness and poor weather. Failure of the crew to follow correct approach procedures also contributed to the crash. All five crew members and 103 of 124 passengers were killed.
28 dicembre - United Air Lines DC8; Portland, OR: The aircraft ran out of fuel while holding for landing and crashed landed. Of the 184 occupants, two crew members and eight passengers were killed.
Anno 1979

8 febbraio - Transportes Aereos Regionais (TAM) Embraer Bandeirante; Bauru, Brazil: This aircraft crashed during takeoff. Both crew members and all 16 passengers were killed.
12 febbraio - Air Rhodesia Viscount; near Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe: The aircraft was on a scheduled flight from Kariba to Salisbury and crashed after it was hit by two missiles. All four crew members and 54 passengers were killed.
12 febbraio - Allegheny Airlines Mohawk 299; Clarksburg, VA: The aircraft crashed during takeoff due to snow on the wings. One of the three crew members and one of the 22 passengers were killed.
13 marzo - Royal Jordanian 727-200; near Doha Airport, Qatar: The plane landed in the midst of a thunderstorm. The crash killed three of the 15 crew members and 42 of the 49 passengers were killed.
25 maggio - American Airlines DC10; Chicago, USA: During the takeoff roll, the left engine and pylon separated from the wing. The crew continued the takeoff, but wing damage due to the engine separation also damaged the aircraft hydraulic system and caused retraction of some flight control surfaces. The aircraft rolled and crashed shortly after takeoff. All 258 passengers and 13 crew were killed. Two people on the ground were also killed.
11 luglio - Garuda Indonesia Airways F28-1000; near Medan Airfield, Indonesia: The aircraft hit mountainous terrain. All four crew members and 57 passengers were killed.
4 agosto - Indian Airlines HS748; near Bombay, India: The aircraft was approaching the airport at night and in poor weather when it collided with high ground about six miles (10 km) from the airport All four crew members and 41 passengers were killed.
7 ottobre - Swissair McDonnell Douglas DC8; near Athens, Greece: The aircraft touched down long on the runway at night during rainy weather conditions. The aircraft eventually overran the runway and caught fire. Fourteen of the 142 passengers were killed.
26 novembre - Pakistan International Airlines 707-300; near Jeddah, Saudi Arabia: A fire developed in the rear of the passenger cabin about 18 minutes after takeoff. During the emergency air turn back, the crew was incapacitated by smoke and fumes and the aircraft crashed about 87 miles (140 km) from the airport. The source of the fire was not determined, but the most probable source was the ignition of fuel from a portable stove carried by a passenger. All 11 crew members and 145 passengers were killed.
28 novembre - Air New Zealand DC10-30; near Mt. Erebus, Antarctica: The aircraft was on a sightseeing flight from New Zealand to Antarctica. Due to a navigational error, the crew flew the aircraft into a mountain during whiteout conditions. All 237 passengers and 20 crew were killed.
23 dicembre - THY Fokker F28; near Ankara, Turkey: The aircraft had a catastrophic in flight structural failure due to severe turbulence. Three of the four crew members and 36 of the 39 passengers were killed

21 gennaio - Iran Air 727-86; near Tehran, Iran : The aircraft hit high ground in snowstorm during approach. All eight crew members and 120 passengers were killed.
27 febbraio - China Airlines 707-300; Manila, Philippines: The crew executed a steep and unstabilized approach, touching down hard short of the runway and bouncing, eventually stopping on the runway after having the two outboard engines and parts of wing departing the aircraft. Two of the 122 passengers were killed.
12 aprile - Transbrasil Boeing 727; Florianopolis, Brazil : The aircraft hit high ground during thunderstorm during approach. All eight crew members and 47 of the 50 passengers were killed.
27 aprile - Thai Airways BAe 748; near Bangkok: The aircraft lost altitude and crashed during approach about 8 miles (12.8 km) from the airport after entering an area of severe weather. All four crew members and 40 of the 49 passengers were killed.
10 maggio - Indian Airlines 737-200; near Rampur Hat, India: The aircraft experienced severe en route turbulence. Two of the 132 passengers were killed.
19 agosto - Saudia L1011-200; Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: The crew turned back shortly after takeoff after a fire broke out in the aft cargo compartment. The aircraft was able to execute a safe landing, but the crew was unable to open the emergency exits due to the smoke and fire. All 14 crew members and 287 passengers were killed.
14 ottobre - THY Boeing 727; Diyarbakir, Turkey : One passenger was killed during a hijacking.
19 novembre - Korean Air Lines 747-200; Seoul, South Korea: The aircraft undershot its landing and impacted just short of the runway causing severe damage to the landing gear. The aircraft caught fire after it slid to a stop. Six of the 14 crew members and eight of the 198 passengers were killed. Also killed was one person on the ground.
23 dicembre - Saudia L1011-200; Arabian Gulf, near Saudi Arabia: Two passengers were blown out of the aircraft after a tire explosion in the wheel well Two of the 288 passengers were killed.
Anno 1981

7 maggio - Austral Lineas Aereas BAC111; near Buenos Aires, Argentina: The aircraft crashed into a river about 10 miles (16 km) from the airport during an approach in through an area of thunderstorms. The crew apparently lost control of the aircraft due to the storm. All five crew members and 25 passengers were killed.
27 luglio - Aeromexico McDonnell Douglas DC9; Chihuahua, Mexico: The aircraft crash landed during a violent thunderstorm, broke in two and burned. Two of the six crew members and 48 of the 60 passengers were killed
7 ottobre - NLM CityHopper Fokker F28; Moerdijk, Netherlands: Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft entered an area of severe thunderstorm activity. The aircraft apparently had a catastrophic in flight structural failure due to an encounter with a tornado. It was seen to emerge from the clouds with its right wing broken away. All four crew members and 13 passengers were killed.
9 novembre - Aeromexico McDonnell Douglas DC9, Near Zihuatanejo, Mexico: The aircraft hit a mountain during an emergency descent after a pressurization failure. All six crew members and 12 passengers were killed.
Anno 1982

8 febbraio - Japan Air Lines DC8-60; Tokyo Bay, Japan: Shortly before landing, the captain deliberately disengaged the autopilot and flew the aircraft into the bay. All of the crew members survived, but 24 of the 166 passengers were killed. It was later reported that the captain had been suffering from schizophrenia
20 marzo - Garuda Indonesia Airways F28-1000; Brantl Airport, Indonesia: The aircraft had a runway overrun in heavy rain, crashed and caught fire All four crew members and 22 of the 24 passengers were killed.
26 aprile - CAAC Trident 2E; near Guilin, China: The aircraft hit a mountain during an approach in heavy rain. All eight crew members and 104 of the 112 passengers were killed.
25 maggio - VASP Boeing 737; Brasilia, Brazil: The aircraft had a hard landing in a rainstorm and broke in two. The crash killed two of the 112 passengers.
8 giugno - VASP Boeing 727; Near Fortaleza, Brazil : The aircraft crashed into a 2500 foot (760 meter) hill during approach. There were also technical problems reported before starting the approach. All nine crew members and 126 passengers were killed.
21 giugno - Air India 707-400; Bombay, India: After a hard landing at night and in heavy rain, the aircraft bounced off of the runway and the crew elected to perform a go around. The aircraft stalled shortly after takeoff and fell back on the runway. The aircraft then ran off of the runway and broke up. Two of the 12 crew members and 15 of the 99 passenger were killed.
16 agosto - China Airlines 747; near Hong Kong: The aircraft encountered severe inflight turbulence. Two of the 292 passengers were killed.
Anno 1983

16 gennaio - THY Boeing 727; Ankara, Turkey: The aircraft crashed about 500 feet (150m) short of runway during poor visibility (fog and snow) and possibly wind shear. There were 47 fatalities among the 60 passengers.
2 giugno - Garuda Indonesia Airways F28-1000; Tanjungkarang, Indonesia: The aircraft had a runway overran on takeoff after one of the engines had a power reduction. Two of the four crew members and one of the 57 passengers were killed.
3 giugno - Air Canada DC9-32; Near Cincinnati, OH: The aircraft had an in flight cabin fire that led to an emergency landing. Of the 41 passengers, 23 were killed as a result of the fire and smoke.
11 luglio - TAME Boeing 737; near Cuenca, Ecuador: The aircraft hit high ground during approach. The crash killed all eight crew members and 111 passengers.
23 luglio - Air Canada 767; near Gimli, Manitoba: The aircraft ran out of fuel after the crew miscalculated the weight of fuel onboard. The aircraft made an emergency landing on an abandoned airfield. There were no serious injuries.
1 settembre - Korean Air Lines 747-200; near Sakhalin Island, Soviet Union: The aircraft was shot down by at least one Soviet air to air missile after the 747 had strayed into Soviet airspace. All 240 passengers and 29 crew were killed.
14 settembre - CAAC Trident 2E; Guilin airport, China: The aircraft was taxiing on the runway to prior to takeoff when it was struck by a military fighter landing on the same runway. Eleven of the 100 passengers were killed.
23 settembre - Gulf Air 737-200; Mino Jobel Ali, near Abu Dhabi, UAE: Crashed during approach after a bomb had exploded in the baggage compartment. The crash killed all six crew members and 105 of 111 passengers.
7 ottobre - Transportes Aereos Regionais (TAM) Embraer Bandeirante; Aracatuba, Brazil: This aircraft crashed into level ground in a severe rain storm during the approach. Both crew members and five of the 13 passengers were killed.
27 novembre - Avianca Boeing 747; near Madrid, Spain: The aircraft was approaching the Madrid airport at night when it descended too low and hit the ground. All 20 crew and 161 of the 172 passengers were killed.
7 dicembre - Iberia Boeing 727; Madrid, Spain: During takeoff under foggy conditions, the aircraft struck an Aviaco DC9 that had not been cleared onto the runway. One of the nine crew members and 50 of the 84 passengers on the 727 were killed. All 42 on the DC9 were also killed.

19 gennaio - Cubana Ilyushin 18D; near Havana, Cuba: The aircraft had just departed and was executing a procedure turn when the aircraft apparently had an engine failure, lost control, and spiraled into the ground. All eight crew members and 33 passengers were killed.
19 febbraio - Iberia Boeing 727; Madrid, Spain: The aircraft crashed into high ground during procedural letdown. All seven crew members and 141 passengers were killed.
15 aprile - Thai Airways 737-200; Phuket, Thailand: The aircraft hit high ground in darkness and was destroyed by the impact and subsequent fire. The crash killed all four passengers and seven crew members.
23 giugno - Air India 747-200; Atlantic Ocean, near the Irish coast: The flight, which was en route to Bombay from Canada, had a bomb explode on board near the Irish coast. The aircraft broke up in flight and crashed into the sea. All 307 passengers and 22 crew were killed.
2 agosto - Delta Air Lines L1011-1; Dallas, TX: The aircraft crashed shortly before landing after encountering a wind shear from a passing thunderstorm. Eight of the 11 crew members and 128 of the 152 passengers were killed. One person in a passing car was also killed.
12 agosto - Japan Air Lines 747SR; Mt. Ogura, Japan: The aircraft had a sudden decompression that damaged hydraulic systems and the vertical fin. That damage also disabled the flight controls for the rudder and elevator. All 15 crew members and 505 of the 509 passengers were killed.
22 agosto Egyptair 737-200; Valletta, Malta: The aircraft was hijacked to Malta. After several hours of negotiations, Egyptian troops stormed the aircraft. During the ensuing battle, the hijackers threw several hand grenades. The aircraft was severely damaged by the explosions and fire. Two of the six crew members and 58 of the 90 passengers were killed.
6 settembre - Midwest Express DC9-14; Milwaukee, WI: Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft had an uncontained right engine failure. The crew initially correctly used a left rudder input to counter the loss of thrust, but switched to right rudder input about 10 seconds after the engine failure. Also, about 1.5 seconds after right engine failure, power was reduced to the left engine. The left engine subsequently stalled and the aircraft lost control and crashed. All four crew members and 27 passengers were killed. The NTSB found that the engine failure improper use of the flight controls by the pilot in command contributed to the accident.

16 febbraio - China Airlines 737-200; Pescadores Islands, Taiwan: The aircraft touched down on the runway but crashed during an attempted go around . All six passengers and seven crew members were killed.
31 marzo - Mexicana Boeing 727; Near Maravatio, Mexico: One of the tires on the main gear exploded in the wheel well shortly after takeoff and damaged the hydraulic and electrical systems. All eight crew members and 159 passengers were killed.
10 giugno - Air Sinai F27; Cairo, Egypt: Shortly before landing in reduced visibility, the crew reportedly attempted to go around. The crew lost control of the aircraft and crashed near the runway. All five crew members and 18 of the 21 passengers were killed.
31 agosto - Aeromexico McDonnell Douglas DC9; Cerritos, CA: The DC9 collided with a single engine Piper Archer which had made an unauthorized penetration of controlled airspace. All 6 crew members and 58 passengers were killed. The three occupants of the Piper and 18 people on the ground were also killed.
23 ottobre - Pakistan International Airlines F27; near Peshawar, Pakistan: The aircraft struck the ground about 2.5 miles (4 km) short of the runway during a night approach. Six of the seven crew members and 7 of the 47 passengers were killed.

3 gennaio - Varig Boeing 707; near Abidjan, Ivory Coast: The aircraft had an engine problem shortly after a night takeoff. The aircraft crashed about 11 miles (18 km) from the airport. By this time, most of the occupants had been overcome by smoke. All 12 crew members and 38 of the 39 passengers were killed.
4 marzo - Northwest Airlink (Fischer Brothers Aviation) CASA C212-CC; Detroit, MI: After a short, fast, and steep approach, the crew lost control of the aircraft and crashed beside the runway and caught fire. Two of the three crew members and seven of the 16 passengers were killed.
4 aprile - Garuda Indonesia Airways DC9-32; Medan, Indonesia: The aircraft crashed on approach in heavy rain after contact with an aerial and pylon. There was also a possible wind shear encounter. Four of the eight crew members and 23 of the 37 passengers were killed.
26 giugno - Philippine Air Lines BAe 748; near Baguio Philippines: The aircraft was destroyed when in flew into high ground about nine miles (14.4 km) from the airport during a daylight flight in poor weather and heavy rain. All four crew members and 46 passengers were killed.
30 giugno - Delta Air Lines 767-200; Los Angeles, CA: The engines were inadvertently shut off during climb at about 2,000 feet. The crew was able to restart the engines at about 500 feet and continued to their original destination of Cincinnati.
24 luglio - Air Afrique DC10; en route Rome-Paris: A hijacker killed one of the 148 passengers.
4 agosto - LAN Chile Boeing 737; Calama, Chile: The gear failed during landing and the aircraft broke in two and caught fire. One of the 27 passengers were killed.
16 agosto - Northwest MD82; Detroit, USA: The crew neglected to properly set flaps for takeoff. The aircraft stalled soon after takeoff and crashed onto a highway. All six crew and 148 of 149 passengers were killed. Two people on the ground were also killed.
31 agosto - Thai Airways 737-200; Phuket, Thailand: While descending during a daylight approach in good weather, the crew lost control of the aircraft and crashed into sea, apparently due to a combination of errors by the flight crew and air traffic control. All of the nine crew members and 74 passengers were killed.
15 novembre - Continental DC9-14; Denver, CO: The aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff in icy conditions. Three of the five crew members and 25 of the 77 passengers were killed.
28 novembre - South African Airlines 747- 200 Combi; over Indian Ocean: The aircraft crashed during a flight between Taiwan and South Africa apparently due to a fire in the main deck cargo area. All 141 passengers and 19 crew were killed.
29 novembre - Korean Air Lines 707-300; Andaman Sea near Burma: The investigating authorities concluded that the aircraft crashed after a bomb exploded in flight based on evidence from the wreckage and the statement of a passenger who left the aircraft after its previous flight. The 11 crew members and 104 passengers were all killed.
13 dicembre - Philippine Air Lines Shorts 360; Mindanao, Philippines: The aircraft crashed into Mt. Gurain during a daylight flight in poor weather. All four crew members and 11 passengers were killed.

4 gennaio - Condor Boeing 737; Izmir, Turkey: The aircraft hit high ground on approach. All five crew members and 11 passengers were killed.
19 gennaio - Continental Express (Trans Colorado Airlines) Fairchild Metro III; Durango, CO: The aircraft struck trees and crashed during an approach in snowy conditions. Post- mortem toxicological examination showed that the captain had used cocaine prior to this flight. The safety board concluded that this use had adversely affected his ability to monitor the unstabilized approach flown by the copilot. Nine of the 17 occupants, including both flight crew members, were killed.
19 febbraio - American Eagle (Avair) Fairchild Metro III; Cary, NC: The aircraft departed during low ceiling, low visibility, and night conditions. Shortly after takeoff the aircraft impacted a reservoir. Analysis of radar data indicated the aircraft was in a 45 degree descending turn. Both crew members and all 10 passengers were killed.
17 marzo - Avianca Boeing 727; Near Cucuta, Colombia: The aircraft hit high ground in haze and mist after takeoff. All seven crew members and 132 passengers were killed
5 aprile - Kuwait Airways 747-200 Combi; Cyprus: The aircraft, with about 100 passeners and crew was hijacked on flight from Bhangkok, Thailand to Kuwait. During the 16-day event, two hostages were killed in Cyprus before the hijackers surrendered.
28 aprile - Aloha 737-200; near Maui, HI: The aircraft had an explosive decompression due to metal fatigue in upper cabin area. The crew was able to execute a successful emergency landing with a significant portion of the upper fuselage missing. One of the five crew members was killed.
12 giugno - Austral Lineas Aereas McDonnell Douglas MD81; Posadas, Argentina: The aircraft crashed three miles (4.8 km) short of the airport during an approach in poor visibility. All 15 passengers and seven crew were killed.
26 giugno - Air France Airbus A320; Near Mulhouse-Habsheim Airport, France: The aircraft crashed into trees during an air show maneuver when the aircraft failed to gain height during a low pass with the gear extended. Three of the 136 passengers were killed.
3 luglio - Iranair A300; Persian Gulf, near Straits of Hormuz: Aircraft was shot down by a surface to air missile from the American naval vessel U.S.S. Vincennes. All 16 crew and 274 passengers were killed.
31 agosto - CAAC Trident 2E; Hong Kong: The aircraft was attempting a daytime landing in rain when it undershot its landing and struck a sea wall just short of the runway threshold. The aircraft departed to the right side of the runway and entered the adjacent bay and was partially submerged. All six crew members and one of the 83 passengers were killed.
31 agosto - Delta Air Lines 727-200; Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, TX: The aircraft stalled and crashed on takeoff due to the flaps not being properly set by the flight crew. Two of the seven crew members and 12 of the 101 passengers were killed
15 settembre - Ethiopian Airlines 737-200; Bahar Dar, Ethiopia: During takeoff, the aircraft ingested numerous pigeons into both engines. One engine lost thrust almost immediately and the second lost thrust during the emergency return to the airport. As a result of the crash landing, 31 of the 105 passengers were killed.
19 ottobre - Indian Airlines 737-200; Ahmedabad, India: The aircraft hit an electric mast five miles (eight km)out on approach in poor visibility. All six crew members and 124 of 129 passengers were killed.
25 ottobre - AeroPeru Fokker F28; Juliaca, Peru: The aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff. One of the four crew members and 11 of the 65 passengers were killed.
Anno 1989

8 gennaio - British Midland Airways Boeing 737; near East Midlands Airport, UK: A fan blade failure at top of climb damaged one engine and the crew mistakenly performed a precautionary engine shutdown on the wrong engine. The damaged engine lost power shortly before landing and the crew was unable to add sufficient thrust to the good engine prior to striking the ground. 47 of the 118 passengers were killed.
24 febbraio - United Air Lines 747; near Hawaii: The forward cargo door blew out during climb and part of the fuselage and interior also blew out of the aircraft. Nine of the 336 passengers were killed.
19 luglio - United Air Lines DC10; Sioux City, USA: While in cruise, engine two had an uncontained failure that led to a loss of all three hydraulic systems. The crew maneuvered the aircraft to a crash landing at the Sioux City airport using differential thrust on the two remaining engines to control the aircraft. One of the 11 crew members and 110 of the 285 passengers were killed.
27 luglio - Korean AirDC10-30; Tripoli, Libya: The aircraft crashed about one mile (1.6 km) short of the airport during a daylight landing attempt in thick fog. Airport navigational equipment for an instrument landing on the intended runway were apparently not working at the time of the event. Four of the 18 crew members and 68 of the 181 passengers were killed. Six persons on the ground were also killed.
3 agosto - Olympic Aviation Shorts 330; Samos, Greece: The aircraft into a hillside at the 3960 foot (1210 meter) level during a daylight approach in thick fog. All three crew members and 31 passengers were killed.
25 agosto - Pakistan International Airlines F27; near Jalot, Pakistan: The aircraft was reported missing after a flight through mountain valleys and poor weather. All five crew members and 49 passengers were presumed killed.
3 settembre - Cubana Ilyushin 62M; near Havana, Cuba: Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft crashed into a community about 1.5 miles (2 km) from the airport. The takeoff was performed at night in gusting winds and heavy rain from local thunderstorms. All 11 crew members and 115 passengers were killed. Also killed were 14 people on the ground.
3 settembre - Varig Boeing 737; near Sao Jose do Xingu, Brazil: The aircraft had been on a domestic flight from Marabā to Belem Bélem when the crew made a forced landing due to fuel exhaustion. The flight crew had inadvertently entered a 27 degree heading into the flight computer rather than the correct heading value of 270 degrees. By the time the crew had discovered the error, the aircraft was too far away from a suitable landing option. Twelve of the 48 passengers were killed in the emergency landing. The six crew members all survived. The survivors were found about two days later.
20 settembre - USAir 737-400; La Guardia Airport, New York: The crew incorrectly trimmed the rudder for takeoff and were forced to abort the takeoff. The aircraft overran the runway and was partially submerged in water. Two of the 55 passengers were killed.
26 ottobre - China Airlines 737-200; near Hualien, Taiwan: The crew was using an incorrect departure procedure and hit cloud shrouded high ground at 7000 feet (2130 meters). All seven crew members and 49 passengers were killed.
28 ottobre - Aloha Island Air Twin Otter; Molokai, HI: The aircraft was flying from Maui under conditions of reduced visibility, turned early during its approach to Molokai, and hit high ground on northeast coast of the island. Both crew members and all 18 passengers were killed.
25 novembre - Korean Air F28-4000; Seoul, South Korea: The aircraft crashed immediately after takeoff as a result of a failure of the left engine. None of the six crew members and one of the 47 passengers was killed.
27 novembre - Avianca Boeing 727; Near Bogota, Colombia: The aircraft crashed after a bomb detonated during climb. All six crew and 101 passengers were killed.
26 dicembre - United Express (NPA) BAe Jetstream 31; Pasco, WA: A combination of an excessively steep and unstabilzied ILS approach, improper air traffic control commands, and aircraft icing caused the aircraft to stall and crash short of the runway during a night approach. Both crew members and all four passengers were killed.

13 gennaio - Aeroflot Tupolev 134A; near Pervouralsk, Russia: The aircraft had an onboard fire while in cruise between Tyrmen and Ufa. The crew made a forced landing about two miles (three km) from Pervouralsk. Four of the six crew members and 23 of the 65 passengers were killed.
25 gennaio - Avianca Boeing 707; Cove Neck, NY: The aircraft crashed about 20 miles (32 km) from the airport due to fuel exhaustion during its second approach to JFK airport after a scheduled flight from Medellin, Colombia. The NTSB determined that the accident happened in part due to the crew's inadequate fuel management and their failure to communicate their fuel status to ATC. Eight of the nine crew members and 65 of the 149 passengers were killed. There were 11 infants among the passengers, and one of the infants was killed.
14 febbraio - Indian Airlines A320; Bangalore, India: Controlled flight into terrain during approach. Aircraft hit about 400 meters short of the runway. Four of the seven crew members and 88 of the 139 passengers were killed.
11 maggio - Philippine Airlines 737-300; Manila, Philippines: While the aircraft was taxiing, one of the fuel tanks exploded. Eight of the 113 passengers were killed.
1 agosto - Aeroflot Yak-40; Pavlodar, Kazakhstan: The aircraft was inbound to Stepanakert when the aircraft impacted cloud shrouded high ground about 14 miles (22 km) from the airport. All four crew members and 26 passengers were killed.
13 settembre - Aeroflot Yak-42, Sverdlovsk, Russia: The aircraft touched down about one mile (1.6 km) short of the the runway during a night approach. One of the five crew members and three of the 124 passengers were killed.
2 ottobre - Xiamen Airlines 737-200; Guangzhou, China: Hijacker detonated bomb during approach, causing the 737 to hit parked 757 on the ground. Seven of the nine crew members and 75 of the 93 passengers were killed.
2 ottobre - China Southern Airlines 757-200; Guanghou Airport, China: The 757 was struck on the ground by a hijacked Xiamen Airlines 737-200 that was attempting to land. There were 46 fatalities among the 110 passengers.
24 ottobre - Cubana Yak 40; near Santiago de Cuba, Cuba: During the approach phase of the third landing attempt, the aircraft struck a high plateau about five miles (eight km) from the airport. The crash occurred at night under rainy conditions. Two of the four crew members and nine of the 27 passengers were killed. The Civil Aviation Institute of Cuba stated that the accident was caused by the flight crew attempting to execute a visual approach under instrument flight rules (IFR) conditions.
14 novembre - Alitalia McDonnell Douglas DC9; near Zurich, Switzerland: The aircraft was flying about 900 feet (275 m) too low during approach and hit high ground. All six crew members and 40 passengers were killed
3 dicembre - Northwest DC9-14; Detroit, MI: The DC9 was taxiing in fog and strayed onto an active runway where it was hit by a departing Northwest 727. One of the four crew members and seven of the 40 passengers were killed. There were no fatalities on the second aircraft

1 febbraio - USAir 737-300; Los Angeles, CA: The USAir flight was cleared to land on a runway which also had a Skywest Metro III on the runway awaiting takeoff. The aircraft collided and burst into flames. Two of the six crew members and 20 of the 83 passengers on the USAir jet were killed. All 10 passengers and two crew members on the Metro III were killed.
20 febbraio - LAN Chile BAe146; Puerto Williams, Chile: The aircraft overran the runway on landing and sank in the nearby waters. Twenty of the 65 passengers were killed.
3 marzo - United Air Lines 737-200; Near Colorado Springs, CO: The aircraft departed from controlled flight and crashed during its approach. The NTSB has not yet determined the cause of this accident. All five crew members and 20 passengers were killed.
23 maggio - Aeroflot Tupolev 154B; St. Petersburg, Russia: The aircraft touched down just short of the runway at an excessive sink rate and during rainy conditions. None of the seven crew members and 13 of the 174 passengers were killed.
16 agosto - Indian Airlines 737-200; near Imphal, India: The aircraft hit high ground during descent about 30 km from the airport. All six crew members and 63 passengers were killed.
11 settembre - Continental Express Embraer Brasilia; Eagle Lake, TX: The airplane broke up in flight while descending from cruise. The horizontal stabilizer separated from the fuselage before ground impact. Examination revealed that the 47 screw fasteners that would have attached the upper surface of the leading edge assembly for the left side of the horizontal stabilizer were missing. They had been removed the night before during scheduled maintenance. All three crew members and 11 passengers were killed.
7 novembre - Azerbaijan Airlines Yak-40; near Makhachkala, Russia: The aircraft was inbound from Elista in poor weather when it impacted high ground. All four crew members and 47 passengers were killed.

3 gennaio - USAir Express (Commutair) Beech 1900; Gabriel, NY: The aircraft hit high ground on approach 3.9 miles (6.2 km) from the runway at about 1600 feet (490 meters) above minimum altitude at that point. The NTSB believes that the glide slope indicator may have been unreliable due to precipitation static. One of the two crew members and one of the two passengers were killed.
20 gennaio - Air Inter Airbus A320; near Strasbourg, France: Aircraft had a controlled flight into terrain after the flight crew incorrectly set the flight management system. Five of the six crew and 82 of the 87 passengers perished.
20 febbraio - Aerolineas Argentinas Boeing 747; en route to Los Angeles from Argentina: One passenger died of food poisoning.
22 marzo - USAir F28-4000; New York, NY: The aircraft crashed just after takeoff in snowy conditions due to icing on the aircraft's wings. Three of the four crew members and 24 of the 47 passengers were killed.
7 giugno - American Eagle (Executive Air) CASA 212-200; Mayaguez, PR: The aircraft crashed one kilometer short of the runway in bad weather. Both crew and all three passengers were killed.
31 luglio - China General Aviation Yak-42D; Jiangsu Province, China: The aircraft settled back down on the runway shortly after takeoff and overran the runway before coming to rest in a water filled ditch. About 108 of the 126 occupants were killed.
27 agosto - Aeroflot Tupolev 134A; Ivanovo, Russia: The aircraft impacted about two miles (three km) short of the runway after an excessively steep and fast approach. All seven crew members and 77 passengers were killed.
28 settembre - Pakistan International Airlines A300B4; near Katmandu, Nepal: The crew was flying the aircraft was flying an approach about 1300 feet (400 meters) lower than planned when the aircraft collided with high ground. The event happened in daylight and with cloud shrouding the mountains. All 12 crew and 155 passengers were killed
4 ottobre - El AL 747-200; Amsterdam, Netherlands: Shortly after departing Amsterdam on a flight to Tel Aviv, the number three engine and pylon separated from the wing and collided with the number four engine. This collision also caused the number four engine and pylon to separate. Part of the leading edge of the right wing was damaged, and several other aircraft systems were affected. During an emergency air turnback to Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, the crew experienced problems controlling the aircraft. The crew lost control of the aircraft shortly before landing, and the aircraft crashed into an apartment building. All three crew members and one other aircraft occupant were killed, as were 43 people on the ground.
24 novembre - China Southern Airlines 737-300; Guangzhou, China: Aircraft hit high ground during approach. All eight crew members and 133 passengers were killed.
Anno 1993

8 febbraio - Iran Air Tours Tu 154M; Tehran, Iran: The aircraft was departing on a nonscheduled flight from Tehran-Mehrabad Airport to Khoram Dareh when it was involved in a midair collision with an Iranian Air Force Su-22 that was on approach to the same airport. All twelve crew members and 119 passengers were killed.
6 aprile - China Eastern Airlines MD11; near Aleutian Islands, USA: The crew accidentally deployed the leading edge slats in cruise. While trying to correct the initial pitching of the aircraft, the crew put the aircraft through several more oscillations. Two of the 248 passengers were killed during these maneuvers.
26 aprile - Indian Airlines 737-200; Aurangabad, India: The flight crew initiated their liftoff late and the aircraft struck a large vehicle on a road just outside the airport. The vehicle strike damaged one engine and the aircraft later hit power lines and crashed. Four of the six crew members and 52 of the 112 passengers were killed. The administrators of the airport were also cited for failing to regulate traffic on that same road.
23 luglio - China Northwest BAe146-300; Yinchuan, China: The aircraft had a rejected takeoff and overran the runway. One of the five crew members and 54 of the 108 passengers were killed.
26 luglio - Asiana Airlines 737-500; near Mokpo, Korea: The aircraft struck high ground in poor weather about 4 km from the runway while it was making its third attempt at a landing. Four of the six crew members and 64 of the 104 passengers were killed.
27 agosto - Tajik Air Yak-40; Khorog, Tajikistan : The aircraft was departing for Dushanbe and the crew was attempting to abort the takeoff. After an unsuccessful aborted takeoff, the aircraft overran the runway and fell into a river. All five crew members and 77 of the 81 passengers were killed. The Yak-40 is normally configured for about 28 passengers.
14 settembre - Lufthansa Airbus A320; Warsaw Airport, Poland: Aircraft landed with a tail wind. Landing performance and aircraft design led to a late deployment of braking devices. Aircraft overran the runway. One of the 6 crew and 1 of the 64 passengers were killed.
21 settembre - Transair Georgia Tupolev 134A; near Sukhumi, Georgia : The charter aircraft departed from Sochi, Russia and was on final approach when it was hit by a missile. The aircraft crashed into the sea about 2.5 miles (four km) from the airport. All five crew members and 22 passengers were killed.
26 ottobre - China Eastern MD82; Fuzhou, China: The aircraft touched down long during a rain storm and went off the end of the runway. Two of the 71 passengers were killed.
13 novembre - China Northern MD82; Urumqui, China: The aircraft crashed about 2 km short during an approach in dense fog. Eight of the 92 passengers and four of the eight crew were killed.
1 dicembre - Northwest Airlink (Express Airlines) BAe Jetstream 31; Hibbing, MN: The aircraft had a controlled flight into terrain about three miles (five km) from the runway threshold during an an excessively steep approach in conditions of snow and freezing fog. Both crew members and all 16 passengers were killed.

3 gennaio - Biakalavia Tupolev 154M, near Irkutsk, Russia: Shortly after takeoff on a flight to Moscow, a failure in the number two engine damaged fuel lines and started a fire near the engine. The aircraft lost control and crashed due to subsequent damage to the flight control hydraulics system. All nine crew members and 115 passengers were killed.
7 gennaio - United Express (Atlantic Coast Airlines) Jetstream 41; Columbus, OH: The captain initiated the approach at high speed and crossed the final approach fix without first having the airplane properly configured for a stabilized ILS approach. The airplane stalled and crashed 1.3 miles (2.1 km) short of the runway. Two of the three crew members and three of the six passengers were killed.
22 marzo - Russian International Airways Airbus A310; near Novokuznetsk, Russia: Lost control and crashed after the captain had allowed at least one child to manipulate the flight controls. All 12 crew and 63 passengers were killed
4 aprile - KLM Cityhopper Saab 340; Amsterdam, Netherlands: About 20 minutes after departure, the crew initiated an air turn back due to an engine problem. Just before landing, the crew abandonded the landing, then for unknown reasons lost control and crashed near the runway. One of the three crew members and two of the 21 passengers were killed
26 aprile - China Airlines A300-600; Nagoya, Japan: Crew errors led to the aircraft stalling and crashing during approach. All 15 crew and 249 of the 264 passengers were killed.
6 giugno - China Northwest Airlines Tupolev 154M; near Xian, China: The aircraft lost control and crashed about eight minutes after a daylight takeoff in heavy rain. The loss of control was apparently due to an improperly rigged autopilot system. All 14 crew members and 146 passengers were killed.
2 luglio - USAir DC9-31; Charlotte, NC: The aircraft encountered heavy rain and wind shear during approach at about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) from the runway. The crew executed attempted to go around for another landing attempt, but the aircraft could not overcome the wind shear. All five crew members survived, but 37 of the 52 passengers were killed.
21 agosto - Royal Air Maroc ATR 42; near Tizounine, Morocco: Shortly after takeoff and while flying at about 16,000 feet (4880 meters), the aircraft entered a steep dive and impacted the ground. While the initial investigation pointed to suicidal actions by the pilot, the pilot's union found no evidence of suicidal behavior on the part of the pilot. All 40 passengers and four crew members were killed.
8 settembre - USAir 737-300; near Pittsburgh, PA: The aircraft lost control at about 6,000 feet (1830 meters) during approach. All five crew members and 127 passengers were killed.
26 settembre - Cheremshanka Airlines Yak-40; near Vanavara, Russia: The aircraft was inbound to Tura on a flight from Krasnoyarsk when bad weather forced the crew to fly to an alternate airport at Vanavara. The aircraft ran out of fuel en route and the crew unsuccessfully attempted a forced landing. All four crew members 24 passengers were killed.
31 ottobre - American Eagle (Simmons Airlines) ATR 72; Near Roselawn, IN: The aircraft inverted, dived, and crashed from holding pattern at 10,000 feet (3050 m) due to icing. The four crew and 64 passengers were all killed.
11 dicembre - Philippine Airlines 747-200; Pacific Ocean: A small bomb detonated under a seat, killing one of the 287 passengers.
13 dicembre - American Eagle (Flagship Airlines) Jetstream 31; Raleigh-Durham, NC: Crashed about 5 miles (8 km) short of the runway at night in icing conditions and with possible engine trouble. Both crew and 13 of the 18 passengers were killed.
24 dicembre - Air France Airbus A300; Algiers Airport, Algeria: Hijackers killed 3 of the 267 passengers. Later, commandos retook the aircraft and killed four hijackers.
29 dicembre - THY Turkish Airlines Boeing 737; near Van, Turkey: The aircraft hit a hill four km from the airport during the plane's fourth landing attempt. Six of the seven crew members and 49 of the 55 passengers were killed

12 maggio - Azerbaijan Airlines Tupolev 134A; near Nahicevan, Azerbaijan: Both engines failed shortly after takeoff and the crew made a forced landing about four miles (six km) from the airport. Two of the six crew members and 50 of the 76 passengers were killed.
8 giugno - ValuJet Airlines DC9-31; Atlanta, GA: The aircraft was on a domestic flight from Atlanta to Miami when the right engine sustained an uncontained failure during takeoff, rupturing a fuel line and causing a fire. After aborting the takeoff, the crew evacuated the airplane. The aircraft was destroyed by the subsequent fire. The NTSB determined that the uncontained engine failure occurred due to a crack in a compressor disk that was detectable. The NTSB determined that the maintenance contractor had failed to perform a proper inspection on that disk. One of the five crew members were seriously injured. None of the 57 passengers were killed or seriously injured.
9 giugno - Ansett New Zealand Dash 8; near Palmerston, NZ: The aircraft struck high ground during a daylight approach in poor weather. One of the three crew members and four of the 18 passengers were killed.
21 agosto - Delta Connection (Atlantic Southeast Airlines) Embraer Brasilia; near Carrolton, GA: As the aircraft was climbing through 18,000 feet, the left propeller shed a blade and the propeller would not feather. The crew was unable to maintain altitude and diverted to a nearby airport. The airplane hit trees and crashed about 5 miles (8 km) southeast of the airport and was destroyed by fire. One of the three crew members and seven of the 26 passengers were killed.
15 settembre - Malaysia Airlines F50; Tawau, Malaysia: The aircraft touched down at about the 3900 foot (1200 meter) point of a 5600 foot (1700 meter) runway. The crew attempted a go around, but the aircraft settled back down past the perimeter fence where it then crashed into a number of nearby houses. Two of the four crew members and 32 of the 49 passengers were killed.
7 dicembre - Khabarovsk Air Tupolev 154B, 200 km east of Khabarovsk, Russia: The aircraft crashed in a remote, mountainous part of the Russian far east. The aircraft was in cruise at 31,500 feet and disappeared from radar shortly after making a routine air traffic control report. All 89 passengers and 8 crew were killed.
20 dicembre - American Airlines 757; near Buga, Colombia: The aircraft crashed into Mt. San Jose at night at about the 9,000 foot level while descending into Cali, Colombia after its flight from Miami. All 8 crew and 155 of the 159 passengers were killed in the crash. Colombian civil aviation authorities report that at the time of the accident, all navigational beacons were fully serviceable and that the aircraft voice and data recorders did not indicate any aircraft problems.
Anno 1996

11 maggio - ValuJet Airlines DC9-32; Near Miami, FL: The aircraft was on a domestic flight from Miami to Atlanta. A fire had started in one of the cargo compartments at some point after the cargo had been loaded. Shortly after departure, the crew reported smoke in the cockpit, and soon lost control of the aircraft. The aircraft went into a steep dive, crashing into the Florida Everglades about 15 miles (24 km) from the airport. All 105 passengers and five crew members were killed.
13 giugno - Garuda Indonesia Airways DC10-30; Fukuoka, Japan: The aircraft was on a flight from Japan to Indonesia when it overran the runway after an aborted takeoff and caught fire. There were 260 passengers and 15 crew on board. Three passengers died and a reported 108 of the occupants suffered various injuries.
6 luglio - Delta MD-88; Pensacola, FL: During the takeoff, the left engine sustained an uncontained failure, causing pieces of the engine to penetrate the cabin, killing two of the 137 passengers.
29 agosto - Vnukovo Airlines Tupolev Tupolev 154; Spitsbergen, Norway: The aircraft was on a charter flight transporting Russian miners and their families to Spitsbergen when the aircraft crashed on a mountain about 6 miles (10 km) from Longyearbyen airport. All 14 crew members and 127 passengers were killed.
5 settembre - Air France Boeing 747; near Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso: Severe turbulence associated with a weather front seriously injured three of the 206 passengers. One of the three passengers later died of injuries caused by an in flight entertainment screen
2 ottobre - AeroPeru Boeing Boeing 757; Pacific Ocean near Lima, Peru: The aircraft was on a flight from Lima, Peru to Santiago, Chile. Shortly after takeoff, the crew reported some sort of mechanical failure. Contact was lost with the aircraft and the aircraft crashed at sea. All nine crew members and 61 passengers were killed.
26 ottobre - Tyumenaviatrans Yak-40, Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia: The aircraft crashed into three helicopters while landing in a snowstorm after the crew apparently mistook the helipad for the nearby airport runway. Five of the 26 passengers and four crew were killed.
31 ottobre - Transportes Aereos Regionais (TAM) Fokker F100, Sao Paulo, Brazil: The aircraft banked sharply to the right and crashed into a residential area shortly after takeoff. Evidence suggests that there was an uncommanded deployment of the thrust reverser on the right engine. All of the 90 passengers and six crew members were killed. Also killed were eight people on the ground.
12 novembre - Saudi Arabian Airlines 747-100; near New Delhi, India: The departing 747 had a midair collision with an inbound Kazakhstan Air Lines Ilyushin 76 cargo jet about seven minutes after the 747 had departed New Delhi. The collision occurred near Charkhi Dadri, about 60 miles (96 km) west of New Delhi. All 23 crew members and 289 passengers on the 747 were killed. The 10 crew members and 27 passengers on the Ilyushin were also killed.
19 novembre - United Express (Great Lakes Aviation) Beech 1900; Quincy, IL: Just after landing, the Beech 1900 was struck by a twin engine Beech King Air that was departing on an intersecting runway. Both crew members and all 10 passengers on the Beech 1900 were killed as were the two occupants of the King Air. The airport did not have a control tower.
23 novembre - Ethiopian Airlines 767-200ER; near Moroni, Comoros Islands: The aircraft was on a flight from Ethiopia to Kenya when it was hijacked by at least two people. While attempting a landing near Moroni in the Comoros Islands the aircraft ran out of fuel and ditched near a beach. Ten of the 12 crew members and 117 of the 160 passengers were killed. The three hijackers apparently died.
Anno 1997

9 gennaio - Delta Connection (Comair) Embraer Brasilia; near Monroe, MI: The aircraft was en route to Detroit Metro Airport from Cincinnati when it crashed shortly before dusk in a field about 20 miles (32 km) south of the airport. According to various news reports, the aircraft spiraled into the ground and was destroyed by the impact and subsequent fire. The weather at the time was overcast with snow, visibility 1.5 miles (2.4 km), and light winds. The flight crew did not have any unusual communications with air traffic control prior to the crash. All three crew members and 26 passengers were killed.
8 maggio - China Southern Airlines 737-300; Shenzhen, China: The aircraft landed at night during a heavy rainstorm at Shenzhen-Huangtian airport after a domestic flight from Chongqing. The aircraft apparently broke up and caught fire after it veered off the runway. Early reports indicate that at least two of the nine crew members and 33 of the 65 passengers were killed.
9 luglio - Transportes Aereos Regionais (TAM) Fokker F100, near Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil: There was an explosion shortly after takeoff in the rear of the passenger cabin, blowing one passenger out of the aircraft. The passenger died as a result of either the explosion or the 7900 foot (2400 meter) fall. Six of the 54 other passengers were injured. The explosion was of undetermined origin and blew out about a 10 by 5 foot (3 by 1.5 meter) section of the right rear of the fuselage.
11 luglio - Cubana Antonov 24; near Santiago de Cuba, Cuba: The aircraft crashed into the sea about three minutes after takeoff on a night flight to Havana. All five crew members and 39 passengers were killed.
2 agosto - Continental Airlines Boeing 757-200; Lima, Peru: During passenger boarding, an elderly passenger in a wheelchair was assisted up the rear portable stairs by a gate agent. The passenger was instructed by the gate agent to remain at the top of the steps while the agent loaded the wheelchair into the cargo bin. However, the passenger continued to walk into the aircraft, through the aft galley and then through the catering door. The passenger fell to the tarmac through a space between the catering truck and the airplane. The passenger died from the fall injuries. The eight crew members and 141 other passengers were not injured.
6 agosto - Korean Air 747-300; Agana, Guam USA: The aircraft crashed about three miles (4.8 km) short of the runway during a night time approach in heavy rain. Twenty one of the 23 crew members and 207 of the 231 passengers were killed.
26 settembre - Garuda Indonesia Airways A300; near Medan, Indonesia: The aircraft was on approach to Medan on a flight from Jakarta when it crashed in a mountainous area about 19 miles (30 km) from the airport. Extensive smoke and haze from numerous forest fires caused reduced visibility in the area. All 12 crew members and 222 passengers were killed.
10 ottobre - Austral Lineas Aereas McDonnell Douglas DC9; near Nuevo Berlin, Uruguay: The aircraft crashed during a night approach in stormy weather. The aircraft departed Posadas, Argentina and crashed about 280 miles (448 km) from Buenos Aires, its intended destination. All five crew members and 69 passengers were killed.
15 dicembre - Tajikistan Airlines Tupolev 154B; Sharjah, United Arab Emirates: The aircraft was on approach to Sharjah after a flight from Khodzhent, Tajikistan when it crashed in a river about 8 miles (13 km) from the airport. Eight of the nine crew members and all 77 passengers were killed.
16 dicembre - Air Canada CRJ-100ER; Fredericton, Canada: The aircraft was on a scheduled domestic flight from Toronto to Fredericton. Visibility at the arrival airport was limited by heavy fog. After the crew disconnected the autopilot shortly before touchdown, they attempted to abort the landing. The aircraft stalled and crashed during the attempted go-around. The aircraft contacted the ground to the left of the runway, crossed the runway, became briefly airborne after striking a ditch to the right of the runway, and finally came to rest after striking some trees. The aircraft was destroyed, but none of the three crew or 39 passengers were killed.
17 dicembre - AeroSvit Yak-42; near Salonica, Greece: The aircraft was inbound from Odessa, Ukraine to Salonica and was in a holding pattern when it impacted high ground. All eight crew members and 62 passengers were killed.
19 dicembre - SilkAir 737-300; near Palembang, Indonesia: The aircraft crashed in a river about 35 miles (56 km) north of Palembang while en route between Jakarta and Singapore. All seven crew members and 97 passengers were killed.
28 dicembre - United Air Lines 747-100; over Pacific Ocean near Japan: The aircraft encountered severe turbulence during cruise about two hours after departing Japan. One of the 346 passengers was killed. None of the 23 crew members were killed but three sustained serious injuries.
Anno 1998

4 gennaio - Olympic Airways Boeing 747; over Atlantic Ocean: Prior to the flight from Athens to New York, a passenger who had asthma and a history of sensitivity to secondhand smoke requested seating in the non-smoking area of the aircraft. Once onboard, the passenger's family discovered that their assigned seats were three rows ahead of the economy class smoking section. This smoking section was not partitioned off from the non-smoking section. Prior to takeoff and during the flight, one of the passenger's family members made three requests of the cabin crew to switch seats, but the cabin crew did not arrange for a switch into one of the 11 available unoccupied seats on the aircraft. Several hours into the flight, the passenger suffered a reaction to the ambient smoke and died.
16 febbraio - China Airlines A300-600; near Taipei, Taiwan: The aircraft crashed into a residential area short of the runway during its second landing attempt. The scheduled flight had been inbound from the island of Bali in Indonesia. The event occurred under conditions of darkness with rain and reduced visibility due to fog. All 15 crew and 182 passengers were killed. At least seven persons on the ground were also killed.
20 aprile - Air France Boeing 727 near Bogota, Colombia: The aircraft was on a flight from Bogota to Quito, Ecuador. Three minues after takeoff, the plane crashed into the mountain at about 1600 feet (500m) above the airport elevation. Although it was an Air France flight, the aircraft was leased from TAME airlines of Ecuador and was flown by an Ecuadorian crew. All 43 passengers and 10 crew members were killed
29 agosto - Cubana Tupolev 154M; Quito, Equador: After two other attempted takeoffs, the aircraft crashed during its third takeoff attempt for a flight to Guayaquil. The aircraft came down in a neighborhood near the airport. All 14 crew members and 57 of the 76 passengers were killed. Ten persons on the ground were also killed.
2 settembre - Swissair McDonnell Douglas MD11; near Halifax, Canada: The aircraft was on a nonstop flight from New York's JFK airport to Geneva. The aircraft crashed at night in the Atlantic Ocean close to shore about 50 miles (80 km) southwest of Halifax, Nova Scotia. All 15 crew members and 214 passengers were killed.

24 febbraio - China Southwest Airlines Tupolev 154; near Ruian, China: The aircraft was on a domestic flight from Chengdu to Wenzhou when the aircraft exploded and crashed about 12 miles (19 km) from its destination. The weather was reportedly clear, and the plane was descending through about 3,300 feet (1000 meters) shortly before radio contact with the aircraft was lost. All 11 crew members and 50 passengers were killed.
1 giugno - American Airlines MD80; Little Rock, AR: The aircraft ran off the runway, broke up, and caught fire after a night landing. There were thunderstorms in the area at the time of the event. One of the six crew members and eight of the 139
22 agosto - China Airlines MD11; Hong Kong, China: The aircraft was landing in Hong Kong at night and during a storm after a flight from Bangkok. The aircraft struck the runway and came to rest upside down and on fire. All 15 crew members survived, but three of the 300 passengers were killed.
31 ottobre - EgyptAir 767-300ER; Atlantic Ocean near Nantucket Island, MA: Radar and radio contact with the aircraft was lost shortly after the aircraft departed JFK Airport in New York on a flight to Cairo. The aircraft crashed into the ocean about 60 miles (96 km) south of Nantucket Island. The NTSB determined that the aircraft departed from controlled flight and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean as a result of flight control inputs by the first officer. All 14 crew members and 203 passengers were killed.
9 novembre - TAESA McDonnell Douglas DC9; near Uruapan, Mexico: The aircraft reportedly exploded shortly after takeoff on a scheduled flight to Mexico City and crashed about four miles (6.4 km) from Urupuan. The crew had declared an emergency about two minutes after takeoff. All five crew members and 13 passengers were killed.
21 dicembre - Cubana McDonnell Douglas DC10; Guatemala City, Guatemala: The aircraft overran the wet runway and came to rest in a residential neighborhood adjacent to the airport. Eight of the 18 crew members and nine of the 296 passengers on the chartered flight were killed, as were nine people in the neighborhood.
24 dicembre - Indian Airlines A300; near Katmandu, Nepal: The flight was hijacked shortly after takeoff. The hijackers killed one of the 173 passengers, but none of the 11 crew members.
25 dicembre - Cubana Yak42; near Valencia, Venezuela: The aircraft was approaching Valencia after a flight from Havana when the aircraft struck high ground about 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Valencia. All 12 crew members 10 passengers were killed.

10 gennaio - Crossair Saab 340; Zurich, Switzerland: The aircraft had just departed on a flight to Dresden, Germany when it crashed just north of the runway. The three crew members and seven passengers were all killed.
30 gennaio - Kenya Airways A310-300; near Abidjan, Ivory Coast: The aircraft crashed into the Atlantic Ocean shortly after taking off at night for a flight from Abidjan to Lagos, Nigeria. All 11 crew members and 158 of the 168 passengers were killed.
31 gennaio - Alaska Airlines MD83; near Pt. Mugu, CA: The aircraft was on a flight from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to San Francisco when it crashed into the Pacific Ocean about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of the LAX airport. Reportedly, the aircraft was diverting to Los Angeles and started a rapid descent from about 17,000 feet. All 83 passengers and five crew members were killed.
22 giugno - Wuhan Airlines Y7-100; Sitai, China: The aircraft was inbound to Wuhan from Enshi when it was forced to circle Wuhan for about 30 minutes due to thunderstorms in the area. The aircraft crashed near the village of Sitai, resulting in the death of all four crew members and forty passengers. Seven people on the ground were also killed.
25 luglio - Air France Concorde near Paris, France: The aircraft was on a charter flight from Charles de Gaulle airport near Paris to JFK airport in New York. Shortly before rotation, the front right tire of the left landing gear ran over a strip of metal which had fallen off of another aircraft. Pieces of the damaged tire were thrown against the aircraft structure. There was a subsequent fuel leak and major fire under the left wing.
23 agosto - Gulf Air A320-200; Near Manama, Bahrain: The aircraft was making at least a second attempt to land at the Bahrain International Airport after a flight from Cairo when the aircraft crashed into the sea about three miles (4.8 km) from the airport. The aircraft was executing a missed approach and descended into the sea shortly after the crew received warnings associated with a flap overspeed condition. All eight crew members and 135 passengers were killed.
6 ottobre - Aeromexico McDonnell Douglas DC9; Reynosa, Mexico: The aircraft was landing in Reyosa, Mexico after a flight from Mexico City, overshot the runway, and crashed into some nearby homes. None of the 83 passengers and six crew members were killed, but four people on the ground were killed.
31 ottobre - Singapore Airlines 747-400; Taipei, Taiwan: The aircraft crashed and burned shortly after taking off from Taipei on a scheduled flight to Los Angeles. The aircraft reportedly attempted to take off on a runway that was undergoing repairs and struck construction equipment on the runway. There was rain and wind in the area from an approaching typhoon at the time of the crash. There were 79 fatailities among the 159 passengers and four fatalities among the 20 crew members on the aircraft.
Anno 2001

4 marzo - United Air Lines 767; near Kona, HI: While early reports indicated that this 767 had a complete loss of power in both engines, the analysis of the flight data recorder by the NTSB does not support this conclusion. According to early FAA and media reports, United Flight 42 took off from Kahului on the Hawaiian island of Maui on a flight to Los Angeles and experienced a dual-engine shutdown about 70 miles (112 km) into the flight, followed by an in-flight restart and a diversion to the Kona airport.
15 marzo - Vnukovo Airlines Tupolev Tupolev 154; Medina, Saudi Arabia: The aircraft was hijacked by three men about 30 minutes after departing Istanbul, Turkey on a flight to Moscow, Russia. After being diverted to Medina, Saudi Arabia, the hijackers entered negotiations with Saudi Arabian authorities and released some of the hostages. The following day, commandos stormed the aircraft and freed the rest of the hostages. One of the 12 crew members and one of the 159 passengers were killed by the hijackers. One hijacker was killed and the other two were captured.

11 settembre - American Airlines 757 (Flight 77); The Pentagon, Arlington, VA: The aircraft was on a flight from Dulles to Los Angeles when it was hijacked and flown into the Pentagon, collapsing part of the structure. All six crew members, 53 passengers, and five hijackers were killed.
11 settembre - United Airlines 767 (Flight 175); World Trade Center, New York: The aircraft was on a flight from Boston to Los Angeles when it was hijacked and flown into one of the World Trade Center Towers. Another jet, an American Airlines 767, was hijacked and crashed into the other tower. Both towers later collapsed. All nine crew members, 51 passengers, and five hijackers were killed, as were untold numbers of people on the ground.
11 settembre - United Airlines 757 (Flight 93); near Pittsburgh, PA: The aircraft was on a flight from Newark to San Francisco when it was hijacked. However, the aircraft crashed outside Pittsburgh. All seven crew members, 34 passengers, and four hijackers were killed.
18 settembre - TAM Fokker 100; near Belo Horizonte, Brazil: The right engine of the aircraft broke up while in cruise at around 30,000 feet (9,140 meters) while enroute from Recifie to Sao Paulo. Pieces of the engine shattered two cabin windows and caused a cabin depressurization. One of the 82 passengers was killed as a result of the depressurization.

24 novembre - Crossair Avro RJ100; near Zurich, Switzerland: The aircraft was on a flight from Berlin, Germany to Zurich, Switzerland when it crashed into a wooded area about two miles (3.2 km) from the runway during a night approach to Zurich's airport. Three of the five crew members and 21 of the 28 passengers were killed
22 dicembre - American Airlines 767; en route from Paris to Miami: While in cruise on a flight from Paris to New York, flight attendants noticed that passenger Richard Reid, a British citizen, was attempting to light some type of fuse that was attached to an explosive device in one of his shoes. Working together, passengers and flight attendants foiled the attempt to explode the device, and restrained Reid using among other things belts from passengers and drugs from an on board medical kit. The flight was diverted to Boston and landed without further incident. Later analysis showed that the shoe contained the explosive triacetone triperoxide (TATP) and if detonated would have been powerful enough to blow a hole in the fuselage. None of the other passengers or crew members were injured.

25 maggio - China Airlines 747-200; near the Penghu Islands, Taiwan: The aircraft experienced an in-flight breakup and crashed into the sea about 20 minutes into a flight from Taipei to Hong Kong while the aircraft was just above 30,000 feet.. The impact area was in the Taiwan Straits near the Penghu Islands about 75 km (47 mi) from the coast of Taiwan. Apparently, there was no distress signal, emergency message, or other indication of any problem sent out prior to the event. Weather and flight conditions were normal, and no distress signal or other communication was received prior to the crash. The 19 crew members and 206 passengers were all killed.

8 gennaio - US Airways Express (Air Midwest) Beech 1900; Charlotte, NC: The aircraft crashed into a maintenance hanger at the airport shortly after it departed for a flight to Greenville, SC. The NTSB determined that the loss of pitch control resulted from a combination of an incorrectly rigged elevator control system and by the airplane’s aft center of gravity being substantially aft of the certified limit. Both pilots and all 19 passengers were killed in the crash.

15 marzo - Air China Boeing 737; en route Hong Kong to Beijing: In the 18 December 2003 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, the authors of a study concluded that five people who died from SARS most likely contracted the disease after exposure to an infected passenger during a three-hour flight from Hong Kong to Beijing. The 72-year-old male passenger who had SARS symptoms when he boarded the flight in Hong Kong was hospitalized after arrival in Beijing and died five days later. Investigations in Singapore, Hong Kong, China, and Taiwan revealed that a total of 20 passengers and two flight attendant contracted SARS due to their exposure on that flight. The 20 passengers and one flight attendant were in the economy section of the aircraft and the other fight attendant was in the first class section. There was a total of 112 passengers and eight crew members on the flight. One of those 20 infected passengers, one of the five from that flight that eventually died, infected a passenger on a Bangkok to Beijing flight on 23 March 2003 and caused two passengers on that flight to become infected. One of the two infected passengers on the Thai Air flight also died.
8 maggio - Ilyushin 76, near Kinshasa, Congo: The aircraft, operated by the Ukraine government, was about 45 minutes into a non-scheduled domestic flight from Kinshasa to Lubumbashi with several hundred passengers when in the cargo hold area when the rear cargo ramp reportedly came open, leading to a rapid depressurization and the loss of dozens of passengers. The crew was able to return to Kinshasa and land. Reports from different news organizations give a varying number of passengers and victims. While no crew fatalities were mentioned and some passengers survived, the number of passengers killed ranged from less than 10 to over 200. This was not a regular airline flight and will not count toward AirSafe.com fatal event rates.

The passengers were all Spanish peacekeeping forces returning from a six-month tour of duty in Afghanistan. 24 agosto - Volga-Aviaexpress Tupolev 134A; near Buchalki, Russia: The aircraft departed Moscow Domodedovo Airport (DME) about 2230 on a scheduled flight to Volgograd in southern Russia. This aircraft took off about 10 minutes before a Sibir Airlines Tupolev 154B which also crashed the same evening after departing the same airport. The aircraft broke up in flight and crashed, about thirty minutes after takeoff and within minutes of the in flight breakup of the Sibir Airlines aircraft. At least one witness reported hearing several explosions at about the time of the breakup. Wreckage from this aircraft was found in the Tula region, near the village of Buchalki, about 125 miles (200 km) from Moscow. Investigators have found traces of explosive residue on both aircraft, and are investigating the possibility that these events were due to sabotage. The two aircraft were separated by about about 500 miles (800 km) at the time of their respective crashes. All seven crew members and 34 passengers were killed.

Investigators have found traces of explosive residue on both aircraft, and are investigating the possibility that these events were due to sabotage. According to the National Weather Service, visibility was about four miles at the time of the crash, with low clouds created a 300-foot ceiling. Both crew members and 11 of the 13 passengers were killed.

3 febbraio - Kam Air 737; near Kabul, Afghanistan: The aircraft was approaching Kabul on a domestic flight from Herat when it crashed in mountainous terrain about 20 miles (32 km) from its destination. The aircraft was scheduled domestic flight from Herat to Kabul and was diverted from landing at Kabul due to the effects of a severe snowstorm. The crew had sought clearance to land in Peshawar, Pakistan prior to losing contact with air traffic control. All eight crew members and 96 passengers were killed. Although this was a domestic flight within Afghanistan, the airline was based in Kyrgyzstan.

18 marzo - American Airlines 767; en route from Los Angeles to New York JFK: The aircraft was on a scheduled flight from Los Angeles to JFK airport in New York when a passenger allegedly assaulted a flight attendant. The 48 year old passenger was then restrained by the cabin crew using flexible handcuffs. Reportedly, seven passengers also helped to restrain the passenger during the latter stages of the flight. At some point, the passenger had difficulty breathing. After landing at JFK, the unconscious passenger was then taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The New York City medical examiner's office later ruled the death an accident that was caused by acute cocaine and alcohol intoxication, which was aggravated by heart trouble. No other crew members or passengers were seriously injured or killed.

8 settembre - Saudi Arabian Airlines 747-300; Colombo, Sri Lanka: While taxiing for takeoff on an international flight from Colombo to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, air traffic controllers received an anonymous telephone call concerning a possible bomb on the aircraft. The crew was informed about this call and elected to perform an emergency evacuation. As a result of the evacuation, there were 62 injuries among the 430 passengers and 22 crew members. One of the passengers died as a result of injuries received during the evacuation, and 19 passengers were hospitalized. No explosive devices were found after a search of the aircraft.

7 dicembre - American Airlines 757; Miami, Fl: The aircraft had arrived from Medellin, Colombia, and was on a roughly two hour stopover in Miami before continuing to Orlando. It is alleged that one of the passengers, a 44-year old U.S. citizen, claimed to have a bomb in his carry on luggage. Air marshals confronted the man on the jetway and shot him after he appeared to reach into his bag. The man died sometime later as a result of his wounds. No explosive was found in the bag. It was reported that this passenger had previously arrived in Miami on an American flight from Quito, Ecuador and had cleared U.S. customs before boarding the Orlando flight. No one else was injured in this event. This is the first time sine 9/11 that air marshals have fired a weapon on or near an aircraft.

3 maggio - Armavia Airlines Airbus A320; near Sochi, Russia: The aircraft was on a scheduled international flight from Yerevan, Russia to Sochi. At the time of the crash, visibility was limited due to darkness, a low overcast cloud layer, and light rain showers. The crew reportedly abandoned the first landing attempt due to the weather conditions. While the crew was maneuvering for a second landing attempt on a different runway, the aircraft crashed into the Black Sea about 6 km (3.8 miles) from the airport. All eight crew members and 105 passengers were killed.
9 luglio - Sibir Airlines Airbus A310; Irkutsk, Russia: The aircraft was on a scheduled flight from Moscow to Irkutsk. Weather at Irkutsk included a low overcast, rain, and thunderstorms in the area. The aircraft landed on the runway, but was unable to stop on the runway. After departing the runway, the aircraft collided with a concrete structure, broke up, and caught fire. Five of the eight crew members, and 119 of the 195 passengers were killed.
10 luglio - Pakistan International Airlines F27; Multan, Pakistan: Shortly after takeoff from Multan Airport on a scheduled domestic flight to Lahore, the aircraft reportedly experienced engine problems. The aircraft lost altitude, struck a power line and crashed in a field near the airport. All four crew members and 41 passengers were killed.
22 agosto - Pulkovo Airlines Tupolev 154M; near Donetsk, Ukraine: The aircraft departed on a scheduled domestic flight from Anapa to St. Petersburg. About 30 minutes after takeoff and at an altitude of about 36,000 feet (11,000 meters), the crew reported an emergency. Another transmission was reportedly received before the aircraft crashed. The crash occurred about 30 miles (48km) north of the Ukrainian city of Donetsk. All 10 crew members and 160 passengers were killed.
27 agosto - Delta Connection (Comair) CRJ-100; Lexington, KY: The aircraft was on a scheduled domestic flight from Lexington, KY to Atlanta, GA. The aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff, about one half mile (800 m) from the end of the departure runway. The event occurred shortly before sunrise, and there was no reported precipitation at the time of the event. The aircraft took off on a shorter runway that is typically used by smaller private aircraft rather than the airport's main runway. Two of the three crew members and all 47 passengers were killed.

7 marzo - Garuda Indonesia Airways 737-400; Yogyakarta, Indonesia: The aircraft had been on a domestic flight from Jakarta and overran the runway after landing at Yogyakarta. The aircraft went through the airport's perimeter fence, crossed and road and an embankment, and caught fire as it came to rest in a nearby rice paddy. Early reports indicate that one of the seven crew members and 22 of the 133 passengers were killed.
