Of course I do not know if the voluminous UFO reports are fairly accurate observations of the physical characteristics of real UFOs, or is this entire business a social phenomenon. If they are real then these observations, along with the recent research by physicists Donald Mallett and Lene Hau, suggests the possibility of a novel UFO propulsion system.
Let’s begin with some things we know:
1) What we experience as the "force of gravity" is not actually a force, but is a distortion of the "fabric of space-time". An unconstrained object in a gravitational field will move in the direction of increasing gravity.
2) Anything that has mass or energy, including light, distorts the fabric of space-time nearby.
3) Gravity is observed to always be an attractive operator locally; however it is overcome on a universal scale by a repulsive, or expansive, operator which physicists call “dark energy” or “quintessence”. The expansive operator has been offered to account for the recent evidence that the rate of expansion of the universe is accelerating.
4) An unconstrained object in a gravitational field will be in "free-fall" and will experience weightlessness, as will an unconstrained object located between equal and opposite gravitational fields.
5) A person "falling" in a gravitational field, regardless of the strength of the field and the rate of acceleration, will not experience g forces. He will not have a sense of "being pushed" (the letter "g" is customarily used to represent the accelerating "pull" of Earth's gravity - about 32 ft/sec/sec at sealevel).
6) If a very large mass is spinning it will drag space-time around with it.
7) Time slows down close to a vortex in space-time such as a black hole, a phenomenon known as “gravitational time-dilation”.
8) Vortices in the space-time continuum are very common. Stephen Hawking (1988) observed that “The number of black holes may well be greater even than the number of visible stars…then the black hole nearest to us would probably be at a distance of about a thousand million kilometers, or about as far away as Pluto…”. Furthermore these vortices/black holes occur in all sizes, from millions of solar masses to smaller than atoms.
9) Under conditions of a vortex (high distortion) in space-time, space and time can exchange roles – what the outsider experiences as time passing will, to the insider, be experienced as a dimension in space.
10) A beam of light at 1.5 times the radius of the “event horizon” of a vortex will “coast” around the vortex as if it were traveling on a straight path, and the gravitational “well” will cause the normally outward centripetal force vector to disappear. (The "event horizon" is the distance from the center of the vortex where the gravitational field is so strong that light can not escape. Anything within this radius will be invisible to an outside observer).
11) Harvard researcher Lene Hau (2001) has recently demonstrated that light, which travels at 300,000 km/sec in a vacuum, can be slowed down to a few meters per second if it is near absolute zero in a special medium (a Bose-Einstein condensate).
12) "Light gains inertia as it is slowed down. Increasing it's inertia increases its energy, and this increases the effect (of a circulating beam of light)" - Physicist Ronald Mallett.
13) The gravitational force near these vortices blue-shifts colors (shifts colors to higher frequencies and shorter wavelengths). Colors shifted into the ultraviolet or higher frequency regions become invisible to humans.
14) "An intersteller vehicle equipped with the ability to form a gravity-well a fixed distance from the vehicle could accelerate itself to relativistically superluminal velocities. Of course, the vehicle would be unobservable, superluminally." - Benjamin Goulart
A Time Machine.
In attempting to build a “time machine” Professor Mallett (2000) offers this recipe: 1) slow two intense laser beams down to meters per sec so the light gains energy, 2) circulate the beams in counter-rotation by reflection or refraction, creating a vortex in space where time and space will exchange roles. If he’s correct time will move backwards within the vortex. He and others are now designing an experiment to test the hypothesis.
A UFO Propulsion Model.
Ok, let’s see if I can pull this together to make our anti-gravity engine.
I’ll assume our gray friends have spacecraft equipped with nuclear reactors, or some other device, which power thermoelectric generators which, in turn, power very intense laser beams. The beams move in an electro-magnetically induced transparency medium, and are slowed to meters/sec. To get started they circulate the beams in opposite directions by reflection or refraction, and when they get up to (actually get down to) speed, opposing vortices are created in the space-time fabric, any one of which can completely overwhelm locally the gravitational tug of the Earth. The vortices themselves, once created, bend the light beams. By varying the speed of the light photons, and thus their inertia and mass (energy), they could control the relative degree of "positive and negative gravities” manifested by the opposing vortices. By generating a pair of opposing vortices at arbitrary orientations about the craft they could move in any direction at any speed relative to an outside observer, or to hover. Obviously the relative power of the vortices must be precisely controlled to keep the UFO from being destroyed by gravitational tidal forces.
But there are many problems. How do you control the time reversal effect associated with artificial gravity? Could a spacecraft actually generate enough energy to form these vortices? (Joseph Rosen states the "Alcubierre warp requires something on the order of a 10^19 tesla magnetic field" which which would require a huge amount of energy. But he goes on to suggest that the enormous energy in the spacetime vacuum might be tapped). How do you create and maintain sufficient Bose-Einstein condensate? It's incredibly hard to create, and is apparently the most fragile thing that has ever existed. Physicists are still making very small quantities of it, only a few million atoms at a time, and they can only make it out of a few different types of atoms. And on and on. So the model UFO propulsion system I propose here, while theoretically possible, is obviously quite impossible to build in the foreseeable future. We will just have to assume that the ETs have somehow solved these problems.
The Model Versus Observed Characteristics of UFOs.
Now let’s see if our model could explain the observed effects mentioned in the UFO literature. All following quotes, except as noted, are from Berliner(1995), Dolan (2000), or Greer (2001):
OBSERVED EFFECT: High Speed Movement, Hovering and Silence.
"...I tracked it for a little way, and then all of a sudden the damn thing just took off. It pulled about a 45 degree climbing turn and accelerated and just flat disappeared."- astronaut Donald Slayton
“UFOs on the other hand appear able to hover with little or no motion for long periods without any sound.”
“Minot AFB on Nov 10 (1975) reported that the site was buzzed by a bright object the size of a car at an altitude of 1000 to 2000 ft. There was no noise emitted by the vehicle”
“The movement of the UFOs was not accompanied by sound of any kind..."
“Hovered and moved up and down in an erratic manner…”
“…the UFO took off straight up, NORAD radar tracked it to 200,000 ft, speeds to 1700 mph”
“He heard a whining noise and the object commenced to rotate CCW and finally raised off the ground”
“Irregular displacement, following contour of terrain, varying speed of displacement, hovering, over-flight of urban and industrial centers, faint humming…to total silence”
“It started at low frequency, but quickly the roar rose in frequency and in loudness…flames were under the object…light blue and at bottom was a sort of orange color…the roaring stopped and he looked to see the craft hovering a few feet above the ground…it was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop…the vehicle then moved away slowly, gathering speed…”
THE MODEL: Their ability to control the relative "positive and negative gravities" would account for the high acceleration, high speeds, and hovering. And, once the vortices are created, the propulsion system consists only of circulating beams of light, which would account for the reported silence (or a low humming sound indicating a low level power output to maintain the vortices).
OBSERVED EFFECT: Abrupt Turns at High Speeds.
"...I saw a orange-yellow oval move very suddenly and make an immediate right hand turn..." - Aug 20, 1993, from NUFORC database.
"...and was distinguished by its startling maneuverability. It seemed the UFOs were completely devoid of inertia. In other words, they had somehow ‘come to terms’ with gravity.”
"But in the (UFO) simulator you'll notice that there are no seat belts. Right? It was the same thing with the actual craft - no seat belts. You don't need seat belts, because when you fly one of these things upside down - you just don't feel it...you have you own gravitational field right inside the craft...to you, you are right side up."
"...the case of the Paul Hill sighting where there were two UFO's circling around each other at a known distance apart, and under a known cloud cover, told you that there were 135 gs of acceleration."
THE MODEL: The maximum acceleration the human can survive for a sustained period is usually taken as about 9 gs, so 135 gs would be quickly fatal. And many other reports mention the abrupt turns at high speeds which would seem to generate g forces greater than humans could endure. Since this characteristic is the most difficult to account for, I'm going to offer two speculations. Take your pick.
Speculation 1- inertia is not a problem:
Here's why I don't think this is a problem for the ETs: As a pilot pulls up out of a dive toward Earth he will experience g forces due to a change in their direction in the coordinate system defined by the Earth's gravitation field; however whether a UFO is in uniform motion or hovering our gray friends are weightless and in "free-fall" in the coordinate system defined by the dominant vortex. If the dominant vortex is abruptly shifted to another orientation, they continue to "fall" in the same direction in the same coordinate system. Their perspective of the Earth will change but they will not experience a change in direction in their own frame of reference, and consequently no g forces. For example if they're initially moving toward the Earth and abruptly begin to move horizontal to the Earth's surface it would appear to them that the Earth suddenly moved from in front of them over to their side. "Down" in Earth's coordinate frame is toward the center of the Earth, i.e. in the direction of increasing gravity. "Down" in their reference frame is also always in the direction of increasing gravity, that is, in the direction of the vortex which is dominant at that moment.
Speculation 2- inertia is a problem:
When they are in uniform motion or hovering the gravitational pull of the vortices is equal and opposite, so our gray friends are weightless. When they accelerate rapidly, as in a sharp turn at high speed the dominant vortex in that direction has created a powerful gravitational "well" which our friends "fall" into, as if they are being pulled along. After making the turn they are again in free-fall and therefore still weightless. But due to inertia they would experience large g forces in an abrupt turn. But not all the UFO's are observed to make high g turns. The larger ones especially seem to move more uniformly and accelerate more slowly. So here is a possible explanation: Let's suppose the high g craft are remotely controlled, or manned by robots. If the intelligence in the craft consists of electronic devices embedded in plastic it could stand several hundred gs, so the observed 135 g maneuvers would not be a problem. But, since we don't know the form and nature of the intelligence controlling the craft, how they deal with the inertia problem remains a large unknown.
OBSERVED EFFECT: Pulsating, Rotating, Colored Lights.
“Unknown craft with a white flashing light and an amber or orange light. Red and orange object, about four car-lengths long…the object looked like all the colors were blended together.”
“On the 23rd (April, 1954) two Pan Am airliners, about 200 miles apart, each sighted a UFO between Puerto Rico and New York. The object pulsated an orange-greenish light, and streaked past both planes.”
“On the 29th, three members of the 2nd Army Radio Station at Fort Meade, Maryland saw and unidentified round brilliant, blinking object, three or four times the size of a large star, moving across the sky in a straight path…”
“On the 13th, for example, many people in both countries (Norway and Sweden) saw a bright silver sphere with a tail, and a V-formation of three bright, rotating objects.”
“…we saw an intense yellowish-bluish light moving out from the shore towards our position. …when the light had attained a certain elevation it became stationary. The original light went out and a luminous beam from it began to rotate…then an intense great halo of yellowish and bluish light developed, and remained”
"There are often multi-colored lights on these objects, daytime and night...The lights are often sequenced on and off, on and off, in some regular pattern."
"...And they just blank out and disappear, then they appear about 15-20 miles away with about 20 seconds, and just reappear. And they do that back and forth."
THE MODEL: The fact that UFO's were observed to have circulating lights even in the daytime indicates that they were not used for illumination; and the fact that they were circulating, sequencing and changing colors clearly indicates that they were part of the propulsion system. The circulating light beams suggest to some observers that the UFO was rotating, but it is not. The reported bright lights of various colors, and the statement “all the colors were blended together” suggests that the shifting of the intense white light through red-orange-yellow-green-blue would result from the "blue-shifting" of the vortices as the gravitational fields increase in strength. When shifted into the ultraviolet region the lights would become invisible - they would appear to blink off, as reported.
OBSERVED EFFECT: Broadband Radiation Emission.
“…this technology it was using for jamming was something we haven’t had before and we don’t have it. It doesn’t exist because it was a very wide band and could jam different bands, different frequencies at the same time…”
“The laboratory conclusion that seems to best cover the effects observed and analyzed is that of a powerful emission of electromagnetic fields, pulsed or not, in the microwave frequency range.”
"All three (autopilot) compasses were giving different readings...So what we gathered was it was an enormous magnetic force in whatever that ball was that we saw out there, that white light."
THE MODEL: Powerful vortices in space-time, such as a black holes, are known to emit powerful jets of electromagnetic radiation parallel to the axis of the vortex. This effect could account for these observations of erratic instruments or the temporary failure of any electronic components. I think it is very important to note that it was a inherent characteristic of the UFO's propulsion system and not intentional jamming, and should not be perceived a hostile action.
OBSERVED EFFECT: Effect on Conventional Aircraft.
"At the same time the 747 had a sudden jump just one, only one jump. Half a second later the noise (static) and light had disappeared. That's the only jump we had in eleven hours of flight" (The senior pilot reported that a UFO passed "maybe 500 ft" below them at great speed)
THE MODEL: Under power the UFO's distortion of space-time apparently extends, although weakly, out to 500 ft. The normal 3-D space was shrunk momentarily as the UFO passed under the 747.
OBSERVED EFFECT: Time Dilation.
“Everything seemed like it was different when we were in that clearing. The sky didn’t seem the same…it was like a weird feeling, like everything seemed slower than you were actually doing, and all of a sudden when the object was gone, everything was like normal again.”
"I haven't talked about this in a while, because I wrote it and thought I'd never have to...The feeling in the forest was very strange. Movement was odd. Perception was odd the minute we entered the forest. I will tell you this - something was wrong."
THE MODEL: Gravitational time-dilation, the well known phenomena that time slows down in the vicinity of a vortex in space-time.
OBSERVED EFFECT: Fading to Visibility.
"...it was like a mist; it looked like a fog on the ground...Then there was an explosion-it's very hard for me to describe it; this thing broke up into multiple shards of extremely bright light! I, and others, suffered burns to the eyes...This explosion of light was very silent, and where the explosion of light happened, there appeared a structured, solid object, rather large - probably 30 feet at the base..."
THE MODEL: When the circulating light beams are blue-shifted to the near-UV regions the craft would appear as a hazy, shimmering light blue. As the power comes down and the vortices shrink reflected light can now escape and the craft becomes clearly visible. The light beams suddenly "red-shift" back to the original brilliant white light, which could be dangerous if you're dark-adapted (the incident took place at night).
OBSERVED EFFECT: Fading to Invisibility.
1) On May 13, 2001 a dimly lighted, slowly moving craft was spotted over Bangalore, India. From the report:
"...Within about 5 seconds from when we first saw it, the object suddenly faded out of view as if went into an invisible mode. The size of the object was the same visually when it faded away as when we first saw. It did not diminish in size..."
2) 1991, Livermore, England.
“…What happened next astonished me, as this dim light (object) eventually just stopped
in mid flight and then remained stationary. Then a couple of seconds later it just blanked off
totally. Disappeared. Went invisible? Remember brilliant seeing conditions and no clouds. I
was dumbfounded by this, my dad less so, but what happened next was really incredible, for
him too! Just about twenty seconds later myself and my father witnessed a dark (black) boomerang,
v shaped, type craft with dim orangey colored lights down all sides. This traveled over our rooftop,
fast and silently, in a westerly direction. The other amazing thing is that this craft just blanked
off too! It went invisible before our eyes and before it reached the rooftops of the houses opposite
our own.”
3) "...And after observing it and having this close encounter, it just sort of disappeared. It dematerialized."
4) "At 10:12R on 10 March, search radar reported unidentified target west of (Panama) canal. A T-33 from Howard Field was sent to investigate. Negative results. Aircraft was in the immediate areas of target with negative sighting."
THE MODEL: These observations suggest that the vortices could be expanded to bring the entire craft within the radius of the "event horizon". As the gravitational fields of the vortices increase in strength reflected light is bent inward. When the fields become strong enough light cannot escape (becomes a mini black hole) so the object becomes invisible to outside observers at all electromagnetic wavelengths, including radio, radar, infrared, visible, UV, and x-ray. There could be thousands of them in the atmosphere and we would be completely unaware of them. Two obvious, rather unnerving questions arise: How do we defend ourselves? Even if all credible UFO reports stop how would we know they are really gone? (Note added Mar 17, 2003: A visitor has correctly pointed out that, although the craft would not be emitting light, it would be occluding objects behind it and thus not be strictly invisible. However I would argue think that it would escape notice except when it is quite close to the observer. If close to the ground during the day or a moonlit night it might cast a shadow, but it would not be seen high in the sky unless it partially eclipsed the sun or moon. On a clear starlit night some stars would be occluded but would not be very noticeable. On an overcast night the blinking on and off of the stars would be indistinguishable from normal cloud movement.)
So, does the model account fairly well for the observations? You be the Judge.
